Every technological revolution produces both concentrated fortunes and quiet casualties. The critical question is not whether AI will reshape the economy, but who will capture the economic surplus it creates.

Is this a modern gold rush, where the enduring winners are the suppliers of scarce inputs? Or is it a railway moment, where early capital providers overspend, competition intensifies, and returns accrue later to operators who consolidate and optimise?

In this episode, we speak to Jeffrey Lin Head of Thematic Equity at M&G to discuss the economic structure in the AI value chain and find out who is likely to win when the dust settles.

What’s one thing you would like listeners to take away?

  • Whilst there may be some ups and downs, the technology evolution we’ve seen in the last 55 years is likely to continue.  What history tells us is as computers become more powerful, we’re able to distribute that computing through networks, and the addressable market for computing increases as a result.

Any recommendations?

  • Listen to any podcast with a tech leader like Jensen Huang, or even read their biography. What you learn is that these individuals think a lot differently than most people, they have massive vision for what the future could look like and that’s really enlightening.
